A protocol gives an ecosystem a common language. For AI applications, that language can describe what tools exist, what resources are available, and how a model can use them.
Why it matters
Without a shared contract, every integration invents its own discovery and invocation patterns. Protocols reduce that repeated work.
What it does not solve
A protocol does not make a tool safe or a workflow correct. Teams still need permissions, validation, monitoring, and careful product design.
